Stratford-upon-Avon

New Groups

These new or recently formed groups are open to new members:

Poetry Matters!

The aim of this exciting new group will be to explore the fabulously rich tradition of poetry in this country - poetry that distils experience, delights, moves us and even changes the way we think about ourselves and the world - by coming together to read and share our responses to some carefully selected poems on a chosen theme for each session.

To facilitate meaningful discussion the poems will be shared in advance of each session and each session will be a stand-alone so members can opt in and out as they wish. As well, because this is a new group, the intention will be to continually review the way the group works to ensure it best meets the wishes of its members.

Anyone with an enthusiasm for poetry, or who would like their interest kindled, will be welcome regardless of previous knowledge or experience. Currently the plan is to hold the sessions in a easily accessible venue in central Stratford at a frequency, dates and times to be agreed by the group.

Please contact the Groups Coordinators for further information using the Contacts page.

Current Affairs 3

A Current Affairs 3 group is in the process of being formed. There are currently three/four members interested in being part of the group.

Please contact the Groups Coordinators for further information about this potential group using the Contacts page.

Fluent French

A new high level French conversation group. Only suitable for very confident and/or fluent French speakers,

Craft

The Craft group has been active for several months but is open for new members once again. Each time the group meets it will focus on a different craft, giving members the opportunity to try new techniques and to demonstrate their own special expertise. The emphasis is on trying out new ideas and learning from each other.

Mah Jong

A Mah Jong group is in the process of being formed. This will be of interest to both experienced players and novices.

To make this group successful we will need:

Mah Jong sets - please let us know if you have any you are willing to lend us. Please contact via the Groups Coordinator at this stage.

‘Table Hosts’ - experienced players who will be willing to sit with novices and guide them through the game, with the Group Leader on hand to lend support and encouragement.  Again, let us know if you can help, please.

Once we have the logistics in place, we will let you have the 'when' and 'where'.

Piano 2

The popularity of the Piano Group has led to the formation of a new Piano 2 group. Currently we have 4 members and at least one more about to join. We meet at 10.30am on the fourth Wednesday of the month in side room 1 of the Methodist Church Hall. We each prepare a piano piece to play for the rest of the group. The music we play varies
considerably, from to traditional to modern classical, jazz, music from shows, etc. Listening to music from different genres is a great help in expanding one’s knowledge of the piano repertoire.

Although playing in front of others is initially very alarming, it is also very rewarding as it is a great help in improving one’s playing. Most of us are “returners”, and are prone to mistakes and hesitations in our playing, but it can be a relief to find others have similar difficulties. We believe our cooperative experience helps us all to improve. We have no specific entry standard, just the willingness to give it a go and play something for the enjoyment of others.

If you are interested in one of these, contact our Interest Groups Coordinator using the Contacts page on this website. Frequency, timing, location and other details of meetings will be agreed between the leader of each group and its members.
